They attended the new Jhugroo Primary School in the Tin Town area of the village. On the left is school principal, Mr S S Maharaj, and in the centre is Mr Dhanraj Sivasanker, who is part of the Sivasanker Badlu historical family of Kissoon Road. The name of the teacher on the right is not known.)

 

INTRODUCTION

This internet site has been created to publish the History and the stories of Pioneer residents of the little village of Ottawa, situated between the towns of Mount Edgecombe and Verulam, on the North Coast of the province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.

The internet site is called Ottawa Pioneer Residents.

The articles, stories and photographs of the Ottawa Pioneer Residents will also be published on Facebook and What’s Up sites.

K C MOONISAMI FAMILY HISTORY – AN INTEGRATION OF INDIAN AND SCOTTISH ANCESTORS

Standing from (left to right) : Reggie as a school boy; Sam; sister Anjila; George, Ali (George's wife); Indranee; Sunny; and Velloo) INTRODUCTION:  On Saturday, February 24, 2024, the last surviving sibling of the pioneer K C Moonisami Family of Gazard Road, Ottawa,  passed away at the age of 73. Dharmalingam "Reggie" Moonisami had survived four other brothers and two sisters. A year or two before his passing, I had interacted with him about the history of the K C Moonisami Family. His funeral took place at the Clare Estate Crematorium in Durban on Monday, February 26. Large numbers of family members, business associates, friends, golfing mates and some old-time residents of Ottawa attended the ceremony to bid Reggie their last respects. THE MAHABEER FAMILY HISTORY – FORMERLY OF MUNN ROAD, OTTAWA

By Subry Govender One of the residents of Ottawa who emerged as a well-known teacher in the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s initially lived in a house in the Munn Road sector of the then Tin Town with his large family of parents, five brothers and one sister. He was none other than Heeraman Mahabeer, who was one of the first local lads to have qualified as a teacher. Heeraman and his siblings first lived in a two-room rented house near their neighbours – the H A Beharees and Ismail Sayeds. Their kitchen and toilet and bathroom were outside the two-room tin shanty. It was here in the tin shanty that Heeraman, his five brothers and one sister were born since August 1938 until July 1960.
